Gozitan visual artist and university academic Mark Sagona is preparing to unveil a brand-new body of work this October, bringing 32 mixed-media pieces together for an exhibition in Ta’ Qali.Titled Crossings, the collection has been created over the past 10 months and will go on display at Gemelli Art Gallery throughout much of October. The exhibition is curated by Dr François Zammit, who has also written the accompanying essay for its catalogue, published by Midsea Books in collaboration with the University of Malta’s Department of Art and Art History. As its name suggests, Crossings sees Sagona continue his exploration of the unknown, bringing together personal experience, subconscious impulses and imagination. The latest works move between drawing and painting, combining different materials and techniques through expressive gestures alongside layers of marks and textures.Compared to his previous work, the collection is described as moving towards a more organic visual language, with a stronger emphasis on materiality while continuing to explore the relationship between physical and spiritual experience.Writing about the collection, Zammit describes Sagona’s latest work as a search for an “internalised truth” that goes beyond the material and rational.“Like the Romantics, this is a search for the sublime,” he writes, adding that the works explore the vastness of existence and Sagona’s decision to prioritise “intuition and inner self over his artistic and academic training”.Crossings will officially launch on Saturday 10th October, at Gemelli Art Gallery in Ta’ Qali and will remain open until 26th October.Private viewings can also be arranged in advance by contacting the artist directly. Will you be checking out Crossings this October?•
