[ESPN NL] Monzialo could have ‘earned twenty times as much’: “Then I could change my family’s lives too”

Wait 5 sec.

There was plenty of interest this summer in FC Den Bosch striker Kévin Monzialo. By his own account, he spoke to clubs at home and abroad, including an Austrian side competing in the Champions League. Real Valladolid were the most serious suitors during the final days of the transfer window, but a move did not materialise. FC Den Bosch rejected the offer, so Monzialo stayed in Den Bosch. The French striker, who has Congolese roots, naturally finds this a shame, but he’s also keeping a level head. “It’s part and parcel of football; I’m certainly not the only one in this situation. Of course it was very difficult. I’m not going to lie – I could have earned twenty times as much at Valladolid. But I’m a professional and had to switch gears quickly, otherwise I’d have played ‘rubbish’,” said Monzialo after the match against FC Dordrecht (1–1). On Saturday evening, he once again showed his best side in Den Bosch by converting a penalty. “I missed against Vitesse, so it was good for me and the fans that I scored this one. I knew I was going to score. The coach said at half-time that I’d turn it around. And my team-mates always give me confidence. That penalty was my responsibility; the people in Den Bosch can see that I give one hundred per cent for them.” He gives his all not just for the fans in Den Bosch, but for his family too. “They also expect things from me, in a good way. If I take a step up and start earning more, I can change their lives too. That’s the most important thing. I grew up with ten brothers and sisters; I always shared everything – clothes, money. They help me too. They drive me around, fly to see me play, even though they have to go back to work the very next day.” The 26-year-old Monzialo is convinced that opportunity will come again this winter or next summer. “You have to keep a positive mindset and show that their interest wasn’t a mistake. Things might not be going so well for FC Den Bosch at the moment, but if you’re a good scout, you’ll spot individual quality. I work hard and have good stats. I’m not worried that interest won’t come my way again.” submitted by /u/Roller95 [link] [comments]
