ok please help me understand what nurses are doing because i've asked a bunch of nurses in my hospital and they all tell me different things and its created alot of confusion for me. We have many medications ordered as IVPB (Like Ampicilin in D5W) we do not take overfill into account for our pharmacy prepared IV products. so a 2g bag of ampicillin will have a listed volume of 106.8ml (100ml is the D5W bag, and 6.8ml is the ampicillin that was added). My understanding is that the nurse enters the VTBI into the pump, and then this sets the rate. so for example, if the nurse enters 106.8mL and its over 30 minutes, then the rate will be 213.6ml/hour. However, at the end of the infusion i would expect some left over in the bag (because there's overfill). How do nurses get the remainder out of the bag? Do you guys flush the bag somehow with the primary infusion bag? - if so how exactly do you do this? Do you just assume theres overfill when you are entering the VTBI and instead of entering 106.8ml you enter 120mls so that by 30 minutes, the whole bag really is empty? Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/SYL135 [link] [comments]
