The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 3.4 quake in Mexico near San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos, Estado de Baja California Sur, only 22 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the evening on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026, at 8:29 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 6.80 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in El Rincon de San Pedro (pop. 35) located 1 km from the epicenter, Las Veredas (pop. 10,500) 3 km away, La Playa (pop. 1,400) 9 km away, and San Jose del Cabo (pop. 136,300) 10 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Miraflores (pop. 1,400) located 27 km from the epicenter, Las Palmas (pop. 11,600) 36 km away, Colonia del Sol (pop. 48,000) 36 km away, and Cabo San Lucas (pop. 202,700) 37 km away.
