Coding agents have questions, too — so Stack Overflow built them a home

Stack Overflow has been the internet’s go-to troubleshooting ground for software developers for more than 15 years — the place where a 4 .a.m production crisis would meet a community that has seen it all before. But the audience it was built for has been changing, and the platform is under pressure to keep apace.In truth, the signs of strain have been building for some time. Gergely Orosz, author of The Pragmatic Engineer newsletter, pondered back in January 2025 whether LLMs had made Stack Overflow irrelevant — and by May, he’d concluded that it was almost dead. Data from Stack Overflow’s own public Data Explorer tells something of a similar story: Monthly questions peaked at around 289,000 in early 2014, held broadly steady for years, then fell off a cliff after ChatGPT launched in late 2022. By the end of 2025, the figure had dropped into the low thousands — a level the platform hadn’t seen since its earliest days.Orosz pointed to two forces converging: a moderation culture that had been alienating developers since 2014, and LLMs that simply did the job better and with less friction.“ChatGPT is faster and it’s trained on StackOverflow data, so the quality of answers is similar,” Orosz wrote at the time. “Plus, ChatGPT is polite and answers all questions, in contrast to StackOverflow moderators.”The question of what comes next has been circulating for some time. In March, Andrew Ng, the esteemed computer scientist and entrepreneur, raised the idea in his newsletter The Batch: Could agents share what they learn with each other, the way developers once shared knowledge on Stack Overflow? He had, in fact, already begun creating an answer of sorts, releasing an open-source CLI tool called Context Hub designed to give coding agents access to up-to-date API documentation.Around the same time, Mozilla launched an open-source project called cq — short for colloquy — built on exactly that premise: a shared knowledge commons where agents query past learnings and contribute new ones, rather than solving the same problems in isolation.Now, Stack Overflow itself has entered the space. The company on Wednesday launched Stack Overflow for Agents, an API-first platform that extends its knowledge-sharing model to AI coding agents.The “ephemeral intelligence gap”Left to their own devices, agents have no mechanism to share what they discover. One agent might spend considerable time and compute working out why an API is returning unexpected errors — completely unaware that the fix is already known. When the session ends, so does everything it learned. How it worksThe platform, available now in beta, is organized around three post types, each capturing a distinct kind of knowledge. Questions document unsolved problems and what’s already been tried. TILs — “Today I Learned” posts — record debugging traces and undocumented behaviors discovered during live work; Stack Overflow considers these the highest-signal contributions, since they capture precisely what’s absent from a model’s training data. Blueprints are reusable design patterns intended to hold across many similar builds and to set the highest quality bar as a result.Stack Overflow for AgentsThe intended sequence is search-first: before attempting a task, an agent queries the corpus. If the answer is there, it uses it. If not, and the agent solves the problem, it drafts a post for human review before anything gets published to Stack Overflow. Agents that later attempt the same problem can report back on what worked and under what conditions, with votes and verification feedback accumulating over time. Accountability is handled through Stack Overflow’s existing reputation infrastructure. Developers register their agents via single sign-on (SSO) using their Stack Overflow credentials, tying an agent’s contributions directly to its human owner’s standing on the platform.The human role is essentially a checkpoint: agents query and draft autonomously, but nothing enters the shared corpus without a human orchestrator signing off first. Ng’s Context Hub, which today has more than 13,000 GitHub stars and more than 1,000 forks, takes a narrower approach — focused specifically on giving agents access to up-to-date API documentation rather than on broader knowledge exchange.Mozilla’s cq project, which has a working proof of concept available for installation today, is building toward similar goals from an open-source starting point. The two approaches aren’t mutually exclusive — cq is designed to be agent-agnostic and locally deployable, while Stack Overflow for Agents is betting on a centralized, reputation-anchored model built on its existing community trust.Whether agents will generate the kind of durable, peer-tested knowledge that made Stack Overflow indispensable to human developers remains to be seen.
