Cost of surviving in U.S. is reportedly spiraling, but Donald Trump has his reasons for ‘loving’ the inflation

On Wednesday, the Labor Department reported that the consumer price index, or CPI, has climbed by 4.2 percent over the past year, with a 0.5 percent increase occurring in May alone. According to The Hill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reacted strongly to these numbers during a speech on the Senate floor.  “This morning’s inflation numbers reaffirm what the American people already know: Trumpflation is getting worse and worse with no end in sight,” the Democratic leader stated. Schumer went on to argue that the current administration is failing to provide relief to families facing rising costs. “Let’s be clear, Republicans aren’t just failing to address the affordable crisis, they’re making it worse. Actively making it worse,” he said. In contrast, when asked if he was concerned about the data, President Trump responded with, “No, I love it. The numbers were great. I love the inflation.” Per The Hill, he linked his outlook to the ongoing military efforts. “We took out the other night, 22 ships, late at night, with no lights, because they don’t have any radar, because we blasted the crap out of it,” he said, adding, “That’s why oil is $85 dollars a barrel.”  CNBC noted that it was unclear what the President meant by “taking out” The economic pressure has been largely tied to the ongoing war with Iran by analysts. Before military operations began, Brent crude oil was trading at approximately $70 a barrel. After, prices soared over $100 a barrel when Israel targeted Iranian oil fields. However, on Wednesday, oil was trading at around $93 a barrel. The Hill reported that energy prices have seen a consistent upward trend, rising 10.9% in March, 3.8% in April, and another 3.9% in May. According to CNBC, Energy Secretary Chris Wright provided additional context during a congressional hearing on Wednesday. He stated that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which is a critical corridor for global oil, is “rising very meaningfully.” Despite this, the effective closure of the region due to the conflict has created a massive strain on energy supplies worldwide.  Trump really said, “I love the inflation.” On camera. For all of America to hear. His contempt for you knows no bounds. pic.twitter.com/ezoDSBPtej— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) June 10, 2026 Interestingly, when asked about the U.S. taking millions of barrels of oil out of Iran, Secretary Wright mentioned that he was unaware of such activity. He clarified that the military has primarily assisted oil tankers in transiting the waterway. The political fallout, per CNN, from these prices is becoming increasingly apparent. Trump’s approval rating regarding his management of the economy has reportedly dropped to 30 percent in a recent survey. The Associated Press also highlighted that critics have focused on the president’s recent comments, specifically his admission that he does not “think about Americans’ financial situations” while negotiating with Iran.  In all fairness, CNBC reported that Trump stated he loved the numbers because inflation is “going to come down like a rock” once the war concludes. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who was present during the Oval Office discussion, suggested that the president’s words were taken “totally out of context.”  First, it was "I don't think about Americans' financial situation."Now it's "I love the inflation."Trump doesn't care that working families are drowning while he and his billionaire friends are getting richer by the day. pic.twitter.com/orEnHmOeAP— Elizabeth Warren (@ewarren) June 11, 2026 Johnson told reporters on Capitol Hill, “What he was saying is it’s going to be great to have that number and compare it to what comes next. When we get these situations resolved, that’ll be a fun thing to consider and compare.” The president also clarified his position to the NY Post, explaining that his appreciation for the inflation numbers stemmed from the fact that they didn’t match projections. “The numbers are going to be phenomenal because what’s showing is that despite the fact that we’re in a war, the numbers are much lower than anticipated, and when we’re out of that war, the numbers will be at lower numbers than they were even before it started,” he told the outlet. Trump reportedly insisted that the U.S. had reached the best economy in history prior to the Iran war. “We had just hit the highest stock market in history, highest 401k’s in history,” but per The Hill,  he emphasized that there were stronger priorities. “Everything was going well, and I said I hate to do this to you guys but Iran’s going to have a nuclear weapon very soon. We have to go and attack,” he explained. Candidate Trump: "I will end inflation on Day One."President Trump today: "I love the inflation."You know who doesn't love inflation, Mr. President? Working families struggling to afford gas, groceries and other necessities because of your disastrous actions. https://t.co/uUMf1vXSmR— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) June 10, 2026 Despite these explanations, the political opposition has been sharing clips of the comments with critiques on X. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, for one, wrote, “People can’t afford to feed their families. Your struggle is a joke to him.”
