A Birgu fireworks organisation is appealing for public support after losing its entire kaxxa tal-ħruġ in the devastating Naxxar fireworks factory explosion that shook Malta on 1st June. The Għaqda Piroteknika 10 t’Awwissu said the pyrotechnics prepared for the annual Feast of St Lawrence were being worked on and stored at the Lourdes fireworks factory when the explosion occurred. As a result, the organisation lost not only the saluting battery traditionally fired when the titular statue emerges from its niche on 10th August, but also all the accompanying pyrotechnics linked to the spectacle. In a statement, the group expressed solidarity with the pyrotechnicians affected by the explosion while explaining how the incident directly impacted Birgu’s titular feast. The organisation said it immediately began contacting other pyrotechnicians to explore replacing what had been lost. However, with numerous festas also affected and the feast season already underway, alternative options have proven extremely limited. The group warned that costs have increased substantially but pledged to continue working towards delivering a fitting tribute to St Lawrence. It is now calling on supporters and festa enthusiasts to help fund the display.“Every contribution counts,” the organisation said, urging people to assist through financial donations and support for upcoming fundraising activities. The Feast of St Lawrence is one of Birgu’s most important annual celebrations, with the kaxxa tal-ħruġ considered one of its most anticipated traditions. How important are fireworks to Malta’s festa culture?•
