Batman now has several different film series under his belt: Tim Burton’s quasi-gothic duology, Joel Schumacher’s two quasi-futuristic entries, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, Zack Snyder’s Justice League saga, and Matt Reeves’ ongoing The Batman series.Now, another is about to begin.Credit: DC / Warner Bros.There are a number of Batman theatrical entries in development, two of them being high-profile projects.Firstly, there’s The Brave and the Bold (TBA), which will join Superman (2025) and the upcoming films Supergirl (2026) and Clayface (2026) in the newly established DC Universe (DCU) under James Gunn and Peter Safran.Directed by Andy Muschietti (2023’s The Flash), it will adapt the DC comic book of the same name; however, it has yet to announce a release date or cast its new Batman actor.In October 2027, Matt Reeves’ The Batman — Part II (2027) will see Robert Pattinson return as the Dark Knight in the standalone universe, The Batman Epic Crime Saga (which is unrelated to the DCU), following the 2022 film, which grossed $772.3 million worldwide. Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon) and Colin Farrell (The Penguin) are also set to return.Then there’s Batman: Knightfall.Credit: DC / Warner Bros.What Is Batman: Knightfall?Batman: Knightfall adapts the comic book story of the same name best known for introducing the villain Bane and the moment where he breaks the Batman, as depicted in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which starred Christian Bale and Tom Hardy in those roles.DC’s synopsis for Knightfall reads:“When the mysterious behemoth known only as Bane frees Batman’s entire Rogue’s Gallery from Arkham Asylum, the Caped Crusader is pushed to his mental and physical breaking point.”Last year, following an official announcement at New York Comic-Con 2025, Variety reported that Batman: Knightfall would be getting a multi-part, animated film series based on the comic storyline.The comic book was released in three parts between 1993 and 1994 (Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd). The big-screen adaptation is expected to adapt all three, which would make it the second Batman trilogy after Nolan’s films.Credit: DC / Warner Bros.Per Variety, Warner Bros. Animation, DC Studios, and Warner Home Entertainment are set to bring a special screening of Batman: Knightfall to France’s Annecy Animation Festival, which will take place over June 21—27.Meanwhile, DC Studios has confirmed that Batman: Knightfall Part 1 clocks in at just 1 hour and 18 minutes, placing it on the shorter end of DC animated releases and live-action Batman films.The film is being directed by Jeff Wamester, known for his work on DC’s animated Tomorrowverse projects, including the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, and written by Jeremy Adams. Rick Morales serves as supervising producer on the films, alongside producers Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau.
