The United States men’s national team have got off to a winning start at the 2026 World Cup. Mauricio Pochettino‘s men sealed a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their group stage opener to get their campaign on home soil up and running. The USMNT got off to an emphatic start to their World Cup campaignGettyAn own goal from Damian Bobadilla opened the scoring before Folarin Balogun netted twice, with him becoming the first American man to do so in a World Cup match since 1930. Although Mauricio carved into the deficit in the second half, the damage had already been done, and Giovanni Reyna‘s trivela strike in the eighth minute of stoppage time in the second half confirmed all three points for the USMNT. It was the first time the USA had ever scored four goals in a single game at a World Cup, which had USMNT legend Alexi Lalas dubbing the team the ‘greatest ever.’“It’s up there. I I don’t know skill-wise if it was number one, but I think for the moment and scoring in the World Cup, but I would put it up there for sure,” Reyna said of his goal to Ben Jacobs, USMNT correspondent for talkSPORT, after the game. The Borussia Monchengladbach winger’s goal celebration went just as viral, though, in which he raced away with his hands over his ears. Some felt that it was a nod to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar when he was nearly sent home by then-coach Gregg Berhalter due to alleged poor behavior. But Reyna revealed to Jacobs that it wasn’t. “It was more something I’ve just me and my best friend and my brother spoke about, but nothing to do with that [Qatar 2022]. Something between me and my brother.”When asked to elaborate further, Reyna added: “Just that I don’t hear much, I guess.”Two celebrations in oneBut with a goal that good, why not pack in two celebrations in one?Reyna admitted his goal celebration was in no way related to Qatar 2022GettyReyna also used the world stage to announce he and his partner are expecting a babyGettyAfter celebrating with his teammates, Reyna then grabbed a football and put it under his shirt before putting his thumb in his mouth. The 23-year-old was signalling that his partner Chloe Ortolano is pregnant. According to The Athletic’s Henry Bushnell, Reyna was waiting for the right moment to announce it. “My wife’s pregnant,” Reyna revealed postgame.“I’ve known for a couple months now. So I was waiting for the perfect time [to announce the pregnancy]. And this sort of felt like it.”When better to announce it than on the world stage after scoring your first ever goal at a World Cup?
