NAIROBI, Kenya June 13 – Tributes have continued to pour in following the death of veteran politician, businessman and former public administrator H.M. ole Lempaka, with leaders and community members describing him as a courageous leader whose influence shaped politics, business and governance in Kenya.Lempaka, who belonged to the pioneering generation of Maa scholars educated in the 1950s, was remembered as one of the most accomplished leaders from the Maasai community. His contemporaries included some of Kenya’s most distinguished public figures, among them the late Prof. George Saitoti and other prominent leaders who emerged from the country’s early post-independence generation.Throughout his career, Lempaka held several senior positions in public service, including serving as a District Commissioner and later as Managing Director of the National Irrigation Board (NIB). He was also recognised as a successful entrepreneur and was among the few indigenous Kenyans of his time to own a commercial bank regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya.His contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey was also highlighted, particularly his role in the push for multiparty democracy during the 1990s. He worked alongside opposition leaders including Kenneth Matiba and Martin Shikuku and served as the National Treasurer of FORD-Asili during the country’s second liberation movement.Beyond politics and business, Lempaka was remembered as a steadfast defender of community rights and a respected elder within the Maasai community. Many credited him with championing the interests of marginalised groups and standing firm on issues affecting his people, particularly in Narok County.Friends, colleagues and admirers described him as a principled and fearless leader who inspired generations through his commitment to public service, integrity and courage. They said his legacy would endure through the institutions he helped build, the leaders he mentored and the communities he served.Lempaka’s death marks the end of an era for many who viewed him as a symbol of resilience, leadership and unwavering dedication to the advancement of both his community and the nation.
