The operators of a Marsa shipyard have submitted plans to create what could be one of Malta’s most unique sporting venues: a padel court floating on a barge. The application, filed by Cassar Ship Repair through company representative Anthony Cassar, proposes mooring a specially adapted barge at Slip No. 6 in Triq is-Salib tal-Marsa and converting it into a padel court, as reported by Malta Today.Planning application PA/03622/26, prepared by architect Alistair Avallone, was submitted to the Planning Authority on 21st April and published today. While the project is officially described as a “barge for padel”, the plans show a much more substantial structure. The proposed court would feature the glass walls typically associated with padel facilities, topped by steel mesh reaching a total height of 3.66 metres. The development would effectively transform the floating platform into an open-top sports facility positioned directly along the Marsa waterfront. The site falls outside the development zone and is currently awaiting a recommendation from the Planning Authority’s case officer, with a target decision date set for 3rd October. If approved, the project would add yet another unconventional location to Malta’s ever-growing list of padel courts. What do you make of this?•
