Even James Maddison will like what Neal Maupay just said about Tottenham and De Zerbi

One of De Zerbi’s former players believes Tottenham supporters have every reason to be excited about what comes next under the Italian. You can give Roberto De Zerbi all the credit in the world for keeping Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, and it still probably would not be enough. The Italian became Spurs’ third manager of the season when he arrived in North London and inherited a squad completely devoid of confidence.Tottenham had not won a Premier League match for around four months, were sitting inside the relegation zone before De Zerbi even took charge of his first game, and had only seven matches left to save themselves.Yet somehow, Spurs survived by two points on the final day and finished the campaign looking like a completely different side from the one he inherited.Several players have already spoken about the impact he had, including James Maddison, Micky Van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario, with some even admitting survival would not have been possible without him. Now, one of De Zerbi’s former players has offered an equally glowing verdict.Photo by Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesNeal Maupay backs Roberto De Zerbi to become one of the world’s best managers at TottenhamSpeaking to FourFourTwo, Neal Maupay explained why he believes Tottenham supporters should be optimistic about the future under De Zerbi. The Frenchman said: “I’ve got to say I’ve got big hopes for him and Tottenham next season. I’ve played for him for a season and a half, and I believe he will be a top manager in the world in a few years’ time. I’m convinced of that.“The hardest part for me was to keep Tottenham in the Premier League. Now he has the time to build the squad he wants, and get the injured players back. Having a full pre-season of work will be hugely important too, because he’s very detailed and it takes time to implement his ideas.“He’s very detailed, and at Marseille it took us three or four months to start to be on the same page. Then all of a sudden, everything became easier for us as players.“So, I think they will be a dangerous team next season. I don’t know to what extent, but I don’t see them having as tough a season as they just had.”Tottenham must now give Roberto De Zerbi the tools he needsRegardless of Neal Maupay’s history of winding up Tottenham supporters (and James Maddison), it is difficult to disagree with his assessment of De Zerbi. The Italian is notoriously detailed, and his football requires time, patience and the right players to execute properly. What made Tottenham’s improvement last season so impressive was that it happened despite several obvious weaknesses in the squad. De Zerbi largely operated without a natural playmaker, lacked a consistently clinical goalscorer, and often had to rely on attackers who struggled for form.Even with those limitations, Spurs immediately looked far more dangerous in possession than they had at any point earlier in the season. That is why supporters cannot help but wonder what this team could look like after a full pre-season and a transfer window built around the head coach’s vision. If Tottenham are serious about avoiding another relegation battle and returning towards the European places, the Tottenham hierarchy must follow through on their promise to build a squad led by De Zerbi and complete key business early enough for his ideas to take root across the entire group.READ MORE: Ted Lasso actor reveals he supports Tottenham, and he’s just as miserable as the rest of usThe post Even James Maddison will like what Neal Maupay just said about Tottenham and De Zerbi appeared first on Spurs Web.
