The original Halloween (1978) by John Carpenter is an undisputed classic. While it was followed by 12 films, viewers will always gravitate towards that first film for its atmosphere, simplicity, and tension. Subsequent entries developed the habit of overcomplicating a simple and effective premise, whether by attempting to explain why Michael Myers can’t die (the Thorn trilogy) or why he’s evil in the first place (Rob Zombie’s two Halloween remakes). The future of the franchise on the big screen (and the small screen) remains unclear; however, a new reboot is already underway in a different medium: Halloween: The Game.Credit: Miramax / Blumhouse Productions / Universal PicturesWhat Is Halloween: The Game?Halloween: The Game is a third-person asymmetrical survival horror game developed by Illfonic (Friday the 13th: The Game, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, Predator: Hunting Grounds), set during the events of Carpenter’s 1978 film, which is a first for the franchise. The official description for the game states:“Boogeyman or Hero: The Boogeyman is out. Team up in a 1v4 asymmetrical horror showdown on everyone’s favorite night of the year. Choose to save the quiet town of Haddonfield from bloodshed as a Hero of Haddonfield or stalk and terrorize the residents as Michael Myers.”As Halloween: The Game is set during the events of the 1978 film, it essentially wipes all the other films off the board in the same way entries such as Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) and Halloween (2018) ignored several installments that followed Carpenter’s classic. The online game allows players to either take on the role of a character from a new lineup of teenagers or as Michael Myers himself. But one of the most intriguing aspects of the upcoming title is the fact that you can also play as Michael offline, in a story mode that starts from his escape from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, giving us more of “the night he came home.”Credit: IllfonicThis means Halloween fans will finally get to see how Michael Myers escaped, his subsequent journey from Smith’s Grove to Haddonfield, and beyond, all from his point of view.Whether playing as a civilian or as Michael, players will explore meticulously recreated sandboxes of iconic locations such as Haddonfield Heights and Haddonfield Town Center. Now, a new story trailer showcasing the offline part the game has been revealed. The video features a voiceover from Dr. Samuel Loomis (portrayed in the original film series by Donald Pleasence) and an appearance from Laurie Strode (previously played by Jamie Lee Curtis):Related: ‘Halloween’ Reboot Will Likely Reimagine Michael Myers as FemaleHalloween: The Game Feels Like a Movie In Its Own RightThe new video plays out like a film trailer, filling in narrative gaps in the 1978 film while also re-creating iconic scenes.“There is so much evil inside him. Fueled by his rage, I shudder to think what he might be capable of. I knew what would come next,” Loomis says in the trailer.“Every soul unfortunate enough to cross Michael’s path would suffer,” he continued. “No one knew of the evil that was walking among them. Unreasoning, relentless evil. But sometimes, I think the truth is something much more terrible. I wonder if perhaps Michael is able to actually move through the shadows.”That last line teases the bogeyman’s in-game ability to “Shape Jump,” the developers’ interpretation of how Michael is able to appear and vanish without warning in the films.Credit: Universal Pictures / Miramax / Blumhouse ProductionsRelated: ‘Halloween’ Reboot Casts Diverse Actor as Michael Myers, Breaks 47-Year TraditionMichael Myers is portrayed in the game by original Halloween (1978) actor Nick Castle, and actor/stuntman TJ Storm, both through motion capture performances.Halloween: The Game launches on September 8, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store). Are you excited about the upcoming Halloween game?
