My husband worked professionally in technical theatre for years. Several times a year they would get amateur productions in, performed by the local operatic society or local theatre groups who hired the building and staff for a week or two-week run. These were often on a large scale, requiring a fairly big crew to fit up, operate and get out overnight at the end. It was surprising how often amateurs expressed surprise that they were being charged the going rate for the staff, particularly for the get-out at the end of the run. There was an expectation from some (not all) that my husband and his colleagues should work all Saturday and then overnight stripping out their set and sound/lighting kit and resetting for the next day for a reduced rate, or even for free, because it was amateur theatre and “fun”. No, mate - this is our job. It’s hard physical work, it’s potentially dangerous if done by people who don’t know what they’re doing, and it pays our bills and mortgages. No problem that you and your mates want to stage a musical, but we will still be slogging after you’ve spent a couple of hours at the pub for the wrap party and are back home in bed. You want your show, you pay the crew for their time and skill.
