My understanding is that you only "have" as many kids as you can lay eyes on at the moment. So my parents at dinner each night had 3 kids ... but on Saturdays, when they kicked us outside to get some sunlight and exercise after cartoons were over, they got down to 0, for what I imagine was a nice quiet few hours.
