Maltese writer Immanuel Mifsud has revealed that the famous invalid ballot quoting his iconic poem Aqta’ Fjura u Ibni Kamra still hasn’t made its way into his possession. However, an artwork inspired by both the poem and the now-viral protest vote has.“The famous invalid vote hasn’t arrived. But this has!” Mifsud wrote on Facebook.“Thank you Kelly Scerri de Carlo and Isabelle Bonnici. It was a great pleasure meeting you.”The artwork in question was recently shared by Isabelle Bonnici and painted by Kelly Scerri de Carlo, Jean Paul Sofia’s cousin. The painting references Mifsud’s renowned poem while also drawing on the protest vote that went viral during the election count, when a voter wrote Aqta’ Fjura u Ibni Kamra across a ballot instead of casting a valid vote.Bonnici had described the artwork as a tribute to victims of construction-related tragedies and a reflection on accountability within Malta’s construction sector. The piece also echoes the message that has become closely associated with the late Jean Paul Sofia, whose death in the collapse of a Corradino construction site sparked national calls for reform.Earlier this week, Mifsud had joked that the invalid ballot was not his and even offered to take its creator out for a coffee if they came forward. While the ballot itself remains missing, it seems its message has already taken on a life of its own through art. What do you make of this art piece?•
