Samsung could make a part of Google’s next-gen AI chip using 2nm tech

Google develops its own AI accelerator chips, known as Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The company is reportedly working on its tenth-generation TPU, and it is said to be in talks with Samsung Foundry to manufacture part of the chip.According to a report from The Information, Google is discussing the possibility of having a portion of its tenth-generation TPU, codenamed ‘Icefish,' manufactured using Samsung Foundry’s 2nm fabrication process. While Samsung Foundry’s rival, TSMC, is expected to manufacture the TPU’s main compute chip, Samsung could be tasked with producing a component that helps connect the compute chip to memory.Google is working with MediaTek on the design of its upcoming TPU, which is still under development. If Samsung secures the order to manufacture part of Google’s TPU, it would be a significant win for the South Korean company, which has struggled to attract major foundry customers in recent years.Google has, so far, relied exclusively on TSMC to manufacture its TPU chips.
