After 70 Years, Government Orders Disneyland Closure

According to official government records, California has ordered Disneyland Resort to shut down the gas-powered Autopia attraction by 2027. This comes nearly two years after the Southern California Disney park announced it would fully transition the opening-day ride to electric-powered engines by the fall of 2026.California Government Orders Disneyland to Shut Down AutopiaCredit: DisneyLast month, Inside the Magic reported that in August 2024, Disneyland Resort paid a $56,250 fine to the California Air Resources Board for violations related to small off-road engines and evaporative emissions requirements for the Autopia attraction. Disney willingly admitted that ride equipment had been delivered or imported into California in a manner that “was not materially the same as equipment certified under Disney’s executive order.” Some of that fine funded the Cleaner Air Greener Schools project, which brings air purifiers and indoor/outdoor air quality sensors into public schools in the Golden State.Credit: DisneyNow, it’s clear that around the same time Disneyland Resort announced its plans to make Autopia more climate-friendly, it quietly reached an agreement with the California government to shut down the Tomorrowland ride by February 1, 2027. However, if the attraction is open and running on gas power on January 31, 2027, it will have to close until the modernization project is complete.Credit: D23Some unofficial outlets have claimed that Disneyland Resort has pushed back the closure of the Autopia refurbishment to early 2027, but the Southern California vacation destination has not confirmed this. As of right now, the only confirmation from Disneyland Resort is that Autopia should reopen with new electric engines in late 2026. The 70-year-old ride is currently open and operating with gas-powered engines. Are you planning a trip to Disneyland Resort for one last ride on the gas-powered Autopia attraction?
