‘The Acolyte’ Receives Season 2 Update After ‘Star Wars’ Box Office Disappointment

If you’re one of the Star Wars fans still rooting for a second outing of The Acolyte, we may have some good news.Set roughly 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), The Acolyte shifted the franchise into the High Republic era. The Disney+ series followed former Padawan Osha (Amandla Stenberg) and Jedi Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) as they investigated a string of murders that exposed a growing Sith threat long before George Lucas’s Skywalker Saga.Credit: LucasfilmThe series sparked intense debate from the moment it was announced. Some viewers praised its fresh setting, morally complex Jedi characters, and diverse cast, while others criticized its storytelling and perceived retcons of Star Wars lore. The show also became the target of review-bombing campaigns and widespread online backlash throughout its run.Despite debuting strongly, viewership declined as the season progressed. Lucasfilm officially pulled the plug in August 2024 after just one season, with reports pointing to disappointing audience numbers relative to its massive budget (estimated to be around $230 million). Disney later indicated that the show’s cost made a second season difficult to justify. However, that could change.Credit: LucasfilmIs There New Hope for ‘The Acolyte’ Season 2?As of late, Disney+ has experienced a surge of interest in The Acolyte. Following the release of Maul: Shadow Lord, the show re-charted on the streaming service.Showrunner Leslye Headland recently spoke to Empire, explaining that she predicts more demand to see the story continue – and that she would happily return to see it come to fruition.“I would still want to do it! Absolutely,” she said. “As more people discover it, I think people may want to see some form of the story come back.”As for what would happen in a theoretical Season 2, Headland already has ideas.Credit: Lucasfilm“We did have a lot of stuff that we wanted to explore,” she said, “including tying in lore to the sequels. Getting into who exactly Manny’s character is, his connection with [Jedi Master] Vernestra, his connection with Plagueis, and then his connection with other sequel-established things.”While Season 1 never explicitly connected to the sequel trilogy, it did include a subtle nod to Kylo Ren/Ben Solo (Adam Driver). In Episode 5, Kylo Ren’s musical theme can be heard when Qimir/The Stranger (Manny Jacinto) heals Osha. Showrunner Leslye Headland later confirmed that it was included in an attempt to hint at a broader link between Qimir and the sequel-era villains, suggesting that he may have connections to the Knights of Ren.Regardless of whether Season 2 becomes a reality, Headland made the point that the fandom’s temperament is extremely changeable. Current attitudes towards The Acolyte may not ring true in the years to come.“The weather changes with Star Wars,” she said. “There was a real negative reaction to [the Prequels], especially from a particular generation. And 25 years later, Hayden [Christensen] is at Celebration.”Credit: LucasfilmRenewed hope for The Acolyte comes as Star Wars faces disappointment at the box office. The Mandalorian and Grogu – the first cinematic adventure in a galaxy far, far away since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) – hit theaters in May, only to receive mixed reviews and generate just over $254 million worldwide as of writing. While it’s made back its budget (with the film made on significantly less than other recent Star Wars projects), it’s still a far cry from what was previously considered the franchise’s biggest financial disappointment, 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story ($393 million). Its performance also casts doubt on future MandoVerse projects. Once touted as the future of the Star Wars universe, the only confirmed MandoVerse project is Season 2 of Ahsoka – delayed until 2027 – with Dave Filoni’s previously confirmed team-up project allegedly in question.Would The Cast Return for Another Season? Those involved in the show have also indicated that its backlash from some parts of the fandom likely played a role in its cancellation, which may ultimately influence their decision to return.Stenberg took to her Instagram Stories (via The Hollywood Reporter) to discuss her experience on The Acolyte, noting, “It’s not lost on me, the way that these events have unfolded is also due to the hyper-divisiveness of the time that we live in. That is driven, I would say, at this point, by echo chambers of thought and algorithms that reinforce our biases. And I think that applies to everybody, but I think that in a particular sect of people, it manifests as a lot of fear for what is changing, a lot of hatred for anything that is other.”Credit: LucasfilmJacinto has openly admitted that he would be keen to return, describing Qimir as the “role of a lifetime” and claiming that he would “love to run it back” if given the opportunity (via TV Insider). With Stenberg and Jacinto very much positioned as the show’s leads by its conclusion, a second season would rest on both deciding to return to the franchise.Would you like to see a second season of The Acolyte? The post ‘The Acolyte’ Receives Season 2 Update After ‘Star Wars’ Box Office Disappointment appeared first on Inside the Magic.
