Lucas Bergvall has been speaking about the difficult season that he and Tottenham endured and his struggles for game time under Roberto De Zerbi. After Bergvall swept all of Tottenham’s end-of-season awards in 2024-25, many Spurs fans expected the attacking midfielder to kick on last season. However, the Swede was one of many Spurs stars who struggled with injuries last term as the Lilywhites finished 17th for the second campaign in a row and only escaped relegation by the barest of margins.Despite Xavi Simons’ injury and James Maddison only being fit to play the final two league games, Bergvall was largely overlooked by De Zerbi.Credit: @thefrederikkejensen / InstagramLucas Bergvall is positive about his game time prospects despite ‘tough’ season at TottenhamThe 20-year-old ended up playing just 113 minutes across five matches under the Italian, and was an unused substitute in the club’s final two league games. However, Bergvall insisted that Premier League survival was everyone’s priority at Spurs, and he is not too fussed at being overlooked by De Zerbi in the final run-in.When asked how the Tottenham boss justified not utilising him, the midfielder told Fotbollskanalen (as relayed by Sport Witness): “I trust that he will field the best team to win the matches. I’m glad we made it. It’s been a tough season for me and the team, with injuries and so on. It’s nice to turn the page and focus on the World Cup.”When asked how he is feeling about De Zerbi staying at Tottenham, Bergvall said: “He’s done well. He’s one of the reasons we’re still in the league. It’s clear that he’ll stay. It was only a few games [that Bergvall was on bench].”Bergvall only has one focus right now amid transfer rumoursChelsea and Aston Villa are rumoured to be interested in Bergvall, but several outlets have indicated that the midfielder has no plans to leave Spurs this summer.Far from being concerned about his prospects of game time next season or thinking about his future, the 20-year-old admitted that he is now fully focused on the upcoming World Cup.When asked if he has considered leaving Spurs, the Sweden international responded: “It’s not something I’m focusing on right now. It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here.”READ MORE: Tottenham warned their ‘paybook’ is too ‘shallow’ to land Morgan Gibbs-White despite De Zerbi rebuildThe post Lucas Bergvall opens up on being overlooked by Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham appeared first on Spurs Web.
