Unfortunately I think this is the mindset that people have been conditioned to have. Main character syndrome of ‘everyone else is only an accessory to me’ meets greed is good ‘fuck you i got mine, authenticity and empathy are for suckers scam or be scammed’. I genuinely feel bad for them as we are all victims of the current economic situation to a degree and I don’t believe in deserving vs. undeserving poor, but these types have had their brains poisoned and clearly have some developmental issues and unresolved trauma that keeps them in this childlike state of selfishness. Mutual aid is great, but I think it works far better in person where it’s harder to be trashy and dishonest, or at least easier to spot rather than online.
