A candlelight vigil in memory of 18-year-old Henry Nowak will be held this Friday at 7.30pm outside the British High Commission in Ta’ Xbiex. The event comes after widespread outrage in the United Kingdom following the release of police bodycam footage showing the final moments of the teenager’s life.Nowak, a university student from Southampton, was fatally stabbed in December 2025 by 23-year-old Vickrum Digwa. During the incident, Digwa falsely claimed he had been racially abused and attacked by Nowak. When police arrived at the scene, officers initially treated Nowak as a suspect and handcuffed him despite his repeated pleas that he had been stabbed and could not breathe.Footage released following Digwa’s murder conviction shows Nowak telling officers multiple times that he had been stabbed and was struggling to breathe. Police later realised the severity of his injuries, removed the handcuffs and attempted to save him, but he died at the scene from his wounds.Digwa was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, with the court rejecting claims that he acted in self-defence or that the attack was motivated by racial abuse. The case has sparked intense debate in the UK about police conduct, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer describing the footage as harrowing and acknowledging that there are serious questions for authorities to answer. An independent investigation into the officers’ actions is currently underway.Organisers of Friday’s vigil say the gathering is intended to honour Henry’s memory and show solidarity with his family while calling for accountability and justice. The vigil is expected to begin at 7.30pm outside the British High Commission in Ta’ Xbiex.•
