A major player in Malta’s gaming industry has just unveiled its most ambitious project yet.4A Games, the award winning studio headquartered in Malta, has announced METRO 2039, the next chapter in the acclaimed Metro franchise, during a special Xbox showcase.Set for release this winter on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam and Epic Games Store, the title is a story driven first person shooter blending survival, horror and exploration in a post apocalyptic Moscow.The announcement has been hailed as a significant milestone for Malta’s growing video game development sector.“We’re happy to witness 4A Games, a studio with a major footprint in Malta, unveil a project of this scale,” said GamingMalta CEO Ivan Filletti, who described the studio as an example of the high value creative and technical work Malta aims to attract and support.Economy Minister Silvio Schembri also welcomed the announcement, saying it demonstrates the success of Malta’s strategy for the video game sector and its ability to foster specialised, high quality careers.Founded in Kyiv in 2005, 4A Games expanded to Malta in 2014 and now operates primarily from Malta and Ukraine, employing more than 200 team members from over 25 nationalities.According to the studio, METRO 2039 has been shaped by themes of war, resilience and survival, drawing on the realities experienced by members of its Ukrainian team following Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine.The game introduces a new protagonist known as The Stranger and promises what 4A Games describes as its most ambitious Metro experience yet.Have you ever played a Metro game?•
