Andrew Giuliani labelled banned referee Omar Artan a ‘bad actor’ and claimed it was ‘absolutely’ the right call to keep him out of the United States. In an exclusive interview with talkSPORT, the executive director of the White House’s Task Force for the World Cup argued that Artan was speaking to ‘bad people, very recently’.Artan was told he would not be allowed into the United States on MondayGettyGiuliani’s exclusive verdict on Artan’s ban“There are some things that we can’t talk about,” Giuliani said.“What I can tell you, from looking at it, is that he’s the only referee, he’s the only non-Irani official, that has been banned from coming into the country for this tournament.“He was talking to some bad people, very recently, about actions here in the United States.“I’ll leave it at that. I know CBP (U.S Customs and Border Protection) has made a statement on it.“What I can tell you from my standpoint, and having seen the information on what he was doing, was that I stand by CBP’s decision. It was the right decision. “What President Trump has been clear on, is he wants to welcome the world that wants to enjoy the World Cup, that wants to participate and be a part of this World Cup here to the United States of America during this incredible tournament.“But he’s not going to let the guise of a soccer tournament come in and give bad actors a potential opportunity to take action in the United States.”When pressed on whether he was saying Artan had possible links to terrorism, even though he claimed to have a valid US visa, Giuliani responded: “Again, I go back to what CBP has said about this.“What I’ll say is, from my seat, it was absolutely the right decision and I stand by it.”Artan’s whirlwind weekArtan was set to make World Cup history as the first official from Somalia to referee a match at the tournament.Giuliani believed border security made the correct decision in not letting Artan into the USGettyHe was one of seven African referees selected to represent the Confederation of African Football. However, he was denied entry at Miami International Airport.Artan endured an 11-hour immigration interview and was detained for several more hours before he was sent on a return flight to Istanbul in Turkey.Despite calls for FIFA to intervene, the organisation confirmed Artan’s travel ban would not be overturned.Even though he had his World Cup appointment taken away, Artan was given a hero’s welcome upon returning to Somalia. The Somali official was also appointed by UEFA as the referee for this year’s Super Cup, which will be contested by Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League victors Aston Villa on August 12 in Salzburg.Even though his World Cup dream is over, Artan has been given plenty of supportAFP“Omar Artan is an excellent young but already experienced referee, who has proven himself at the highest competition level of the Confederation of African Football,” UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said.“Football is made to connect people, and UEFA wants to show its respect to Omar and his outstanding officiating skills, which had earned him such a prestigious nomination.”World Cup WhatsAppDon't miss an update from talkSPORT in our dedicated World Cup WhatsApp channel.Search for ‘talkSPORT World Cup’ in your ‘Updates’ tab on WhatsApp and we’ll drop the proper, unfiltered football chat straight to your lock screen—no fluff, just pure talkSPORT energy. It’s where you’ll find out all the new rules to watch out for, England and Scotland reaction and big match player ratings.
