Italian music icon Orietta Berti has opened up about her unforgettable Malta birthday, and not for the reasons she would have hoped. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Speaking on Italian television this week, the beloved singer recalled being woken up by the massive explosion at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory in Naxxar on the morning of her 83rd birthday.“Don’t talk to me about my birthday,” Berti joked during an appearance on Rai Uno’s La Volta Buona.Berti had performed at the Mediterranean Conference Centre the night before and was staying at a hotel in Malta when the blast occurred.According to the singer, the explosion shattered windows throughout the hotel, forcing guests to evacuate.“All the windows of the hotel were shattered,” she said, explaining that she then had to walk down six flights of stairs before waiting in the lobby for around three hours.The drama didn’t end there. Later that day, Berti was due to fly home but had to take a lengthy detour to Malta International Airport due to road closures following the explosion.After finally arriving in Rome, she discovered her luggage had gone missing.The suitcase eventually arrived seven days later, forcing Berti to improvise in the meantime.The Naxxar explosion completely destroyed the Lourdes Fireworks Factory and caused damage to properties kilometres away.
