It may have been Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie who got things started for the U.S. men’s national team on Friday night but Folarin Balogun was sensational in his FIFA World Cup debut.Balogun scored twice in the USMNT’s 4-1 Group D victory over Paraguay at SoFi Stadium. The versatile striker earned SBI Man of the Match honors after his impactful performance in Los Angeles. “I’m over the moon,” Balogun said postmatch in a FIFA interview. “Three goals in the first half, four goals overall. What a beautiful evening, what a great performance and looking forward to the next one.”A Damian Bobadilla own goal propelled Mauricio Pochettino’s squad into an early lead before Balogun helped ice the result before halftime. Balogun doubled the USMNT’s lead in the 31st minute, getting on the end of Pulisic’s cross from the left wing for a one-time finish. It marked the 24-year-old’s 10th international goal for the USMNT. After extending the Americans lead, Balogun dialed his own number for his second tally of the night before halftime. Malik Tillman’s upfield pass allowed Balogun to pick up possession before cutting into the Paraguay box and roofing a shot into the top-left corner. The goal made Balogun the first USMNT player since Bert Patenaude in 1930 to record a multi-goal performance in a World Cup match. He played 72 minutes in the match, being replaced by Ricardo Pepi for the final stanza. Despite improved pressure from Paraguay and a consolation goal from Mauricio in the second half, the USMNT would hang on for a vital three points in their opening match. Balogun edged Pulisic, McKennie, and Malik Tillman for Man of the Match honors. What did you think of Balogun’s performance?
