In an electrifying address to thousands gathered in Linden, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, made a passionate appeal for Region 10 support at the September 1 general elections. With Region 10 long seen as a stronghold of the political opposition, Jagdeo acknowledged the PPP has “never won this region,” but stressed that its fortunes could be improve if residents embrace the PPP/C’s record of delivery and progress. He said the PPP has suffered from sabotage by those who control Region Ten and the town of Linden, mainly from the opposition PNC.“They want you to believe that you can only make progress if you vote for them. Well, they can’t even help themselves. How are they going to help you?” he said, calling on residents to disregard empty promises and instead reflect on the PPP/C’s proven achievements. He urged families to have “conversations” about the country’s direction and to study the party’s flyers detailing fulfilled 2020 campaign promises.Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo addressed the crowd at the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPP/C) election rally in Wismar, Linden on Sunday night.(Photos: News Room/ August 3, 2025)Among those achievements, he highlighted the return and increase of the school children’s grant, now totalling $55,000 per child annually.Jagdeo also pointed to a doubling of the old-age pension from $20,500 to $41,000 monthly and the removal of over 200 taxes, with no new ones added under the PPP/C’s term.“We promised no new taxes in the five years and we did not institute a single tax,” Jagdeo stated,On job creation, Jagdeo noted: “60,000 people more are working,” and reported $18 billion spent in two years on road projects involving more than 700 contractors from Region 10 alone.Addressing Linden’s youth, he quizzed what would happen after they are paid to support Azruddin Mohamed’s party: “When someone comes along and promises them $50,000 to wear a T-shirt or attend the meeting, ask them what happens after the $50,000 is gone?”Jagdeo contrasted that short-term thinking with his party’s longer-term investments: new house lots, job creation, training programmes, free Wi-Fi for education, and a US$30 million upgrade to the Linden Hospital.“We are setting up a Development Bank so that you can get a zero-interest loan to start and expand your small business,” he added, promising more support for citizens.Despite the criticisms, Jagdeo said support for the PPP would come when the disinformation of the PPP ends.“Tonight is a night for you… to go back home and have that conversation with your family and with your neighbours… Tell them we’re killing racism in this country. The PPP is killing racism in this country.”As he closed, he reminded the crowd that the stakes on 1st September are high: “It’s your future at stake here. Don’t risk it… The only choice is one political party: the People’s Progressive Party/Civic.”The post PPP General Secretary makes passionate appeal for Region 10 support appeared first on News Room Guyana.
