Disney Removes Males Pirates From Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

This weekend, multiple male pirate audio-animatronics went missing from Disneyland Paris Resort’s version of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Disney Park guests confirmed that the figures were present on the attraction as recently as Friday, meaning that the removal occurred sometime in the last 48 hours. In 1967, Disney Park history was made with the grand opening of Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. Versions of the attraction popped up and became a must-do at Disney parks around the globe, including Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disneyland at Tokyo Disney Resort, and Disneyland Park at Disneyland Paris Resort.Credit: Inside the MagicA lot has changed since the swashbuckling pirates made their debut in the 1960s. In the 2000s, Walt Disney Imagineers added Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) audio-animatronics into several versions of the attraction. In the late 2010s, they updated a bride auction scene, turning women-for-sale into independent female pirates.Like any change to a classic Disney Park attraction, the auction scene update was controversial. Some Disney Parks fans welcomed the feminist update; others argued that sanitizing the realities of piracy was wrong. But another contingent of Disney Park guests felt Imagineers didn’t go far enough. However, like any theme park attraction, it requires maintenance, which means occasional, temporary changes.Disneyland Paris Resort guests have noticed several temporary removals inside Pirates of the Caribbean over the last year or so. Every few weeks, it seems like one or two audio-animatronics quietly disappear from the ride, eventually returning without any fanfare. Although the European Disney park hasn’t made any public statements about the project, it appears to be nothing more than routine maintenance being done in stages to avoid a total ride closure. However, Disneyland Paris Resort hasn’t publicly confirmed when the audio-animatronics will return. Have you noticed any missing animatronics on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride?
