The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for Region Ten – Upper Demerara-Berbice – has traditionally been led by the opposition People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R). However, this year, Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips foresees a shift, as more residents turned out on Sunday to support the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).“Don’t only elect President Dr Irfaan Ali, but also an RDC that is PPP,” Phillips told the massive crowd as the party took its re-election campaign to Linden.“No longer must we have an RDC controlled by the green enemy… Emancipate yourself from mental slavery,” he added.Supporters in Wismar, Linden for the People’s Progressive Party Civic’s (PPP/C) election rally.(Photos: News Room. August 3, 2025)Phillips, who also hails from Linden, said the Opposition must be seen as the enemy, given their lack of delivery to the region during their time in government from 2015 to 2020.According to the Prime Minister, the APNU+AFC coalition invested $4.2 billion in the region over five years, while the PPP/C has allocated $122.6 billion from 2020 to 2025.“How can they claim to like you and yet spend so little money in Region Ten?” he questioned. He told residents that the PPP/C will continue to invest in the region, pointing to the construction of roads, a new airstrip, investments in Indigenous communities, the rehabilitation of the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, and the development of a solar farm to meet electricity demand.“APNU was in office for five years, and many people lost their lives on the highway, and they did nothing… How can you vote for these jokers? They don’t have your interests at heart,” Phillips said.He added that when other parties make vague promises to act “very soon, very shortly,” such statements must be followed by real developmental projects. The Prime Minister was at the time referencing remarks by the leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, who used the phrase when asked about his plans for the country.Noting that the PPP/C will increase the $100,000 cash grants given to every resident over the age of 18, deliver more house lots, and continue to build the region, the Prime Minister urged residents: “Go quietly into the polling place, wake up early, wake up everybody, and go to the polling place and put the X next to the cup… This is a time for you to vote for development, personal growth, personal upliftment, and self-development.”The post Prime Minister lobbies for control of Region Ten appeared first on News Room Guyana.
