Samsung phones are routinely used as a testbed by AST Space Mobile and its cellular partners as they continue to build out satellite networks to provide uninterrupted connectivity in places where cellular service is hard to find. AST Space Mobile and Bell Canada today announced the successful completion of space-based VoLTE voice call, broadband data, and video streaming. The test was performed on unmodified Samsung Galaxy phones, showcasing direct-to-cell capabilities with no additional hardware required. Bell's satellite service to launch next yearWhat this effectively means is that supported devices from Samsung and other manufacturers will be able to obtain reliable data connection straight from the satellite, enabling them to have connectivity in remote regions. This test will ultimately pave the way for Bell Canada's planned launch of low Earth orbit direct-to-cell service next year, which will be powered by AST Space Mobile's satellites. The video released by Bell show VoLTE calls and streaming being handled very easily by Samsung Galaxy phones, including a Galaxy S25 Ultra.Satellite-based services are progressing far beyond providing just essential communication capabilities. As this test shows, the service will allow users to access even streaming content via their satellite connection while they're out of range for conventional cellular service. This isn't the first instance of Samsung phones enabling such historic milestones. AST Space Mobile and Japan's Rakuten Mobile made the country's first-ever broadband video call through a low Earth orbit satellite using an unmodified Galaxy phone back in April this year.It goes to show the trust that companies powering the future of connectivity place in Samsung's devices. The post Bell and AST use Samsung phones to demonstrate historic space-based video streaming appeared first on SamMobile.
