Michael Carrick been appointed as a technical observer for UEFA amid a potential return to Manchester United.Since retiring from professional football in 2018, ex-midfielder and five-time Premier League winner Carrick has ventured into coaching.Carrick has taken up an analysis role for UEFA in the Champions League this seasonGettyHe was an assistant manager to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at United before acting as caretaker manager for three matches in 2021.Carrick was then given his first permanent job at Middlesbrough in 2022, with whom he spent three seasons before his exit in June.talkSPORT reported earlier in the week that the 44-year-old would be tempted with a return to United. This comes amid the increasing pressure on Ruben Amorim, who has won only 19 of his 49 matches in charge. However, Carrick has a new analytical role to focus on with UEFA.He was on analysis duty for the Champions League clash between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.Carrick delved into how PSG won 2-1 away to their Spanish opponents with a feature called In The Zone.“There was so much focus on pressing forward and relying on regaining it in that direction,” he explained.“But as we saw, the downside of this is there is a lot of space behind and across the back line.“It’s great if you win the ball back or if the other team keep passing to feet and trying to keep possession but it leaves you exposed against a team that is happy to run and pass less.”Carrick would be keen to work at United yet againGettyHe could be the man to replace Amorim at Old TraffordGettyUsing his coaching experience on how to practice exploiting high lines, he added: “A simple passing sequence with a line of mannequins to time your run and stay onside for the pass through is one way. “You should have a coach close to a player so he has to run off the blindside of him and join the forward pass, or use him to play a one-two around him.“I’d then move on to a possession-based game where there is an end zone where defenders can’t go into. This is to emphasise running into that zone to receive the pass. “Players need an understanding of when to run – the triggers – and also of where to pass. And for whoever is playing that pass, it should not be ‘at’ the player, but ‘in front’, into the space.“It sounds simple but to have the picture in your head, to know the space is there and then having the willingness to run, those are the key things.”What next for Amorim and United?United have picked up only two wins from their opening seven games in all competitions this season.Amorim has lost 21 of his matches as United bossGettyThey most recently lost 3-1 at Brentford, and the next match on their schedule will be Amorim’s 50th in charge.Sunderland will be the latest side to arrive at Old Trafford with belief they can take all three points. If United were to lose, the club hierarchy could be set to consider a change in manager yet again.talkSPORT understands former England boss Sir Gareth Southgate is an option to replace Amorim should he leave.Oliver Glasner and Andoni Iraola of Crystal Palace and Bournemouth respectively are also potential replacements.
