Braving heavy downpour at Shivaji Park, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the BJP and the ruling Mahayuti government accusing it of corruption and opportunism and undermining the interest of Maharashtra and Mumbai. He warned that if the BJP managed to win the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the city could be “surrendered to Adani.”Thackeray promised to bring a white paper exposing alleged corruption in the BMC, and took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, and Maharashtra’s leadership, while asserting the Shiv Sena’s commitment to protect Mumbai’s identity.Addressing thousands of drenched Sainiks at the annual Dussehra rally, Thackeray said “the BJP views Mumbai as a commercial asset, but for us it is a matter of life and pride. They have looted the BMC in the past three years. If they win the BMC (polls), they will surrender Mumbai to Adani (Industrialist Gautam Adani). I now really wish that they should take the polls as soon as possible. Once we return to power in the BMC, we would publish a detailed report exposing three years of alleged financial mismanagement under the Mahayuti.”Thackeray likened the BJP party to an “amoeba,” a single-celled organism with no fixed form.“An amoeba in the stomach causes pain. Similarly, BJP has entered society and disturbed peace. They expand everywhere but remain single-celled — leaving no room for others,” he said, accusing the party of “opportunistic alliances driven by power, not principle”.Uddhav also slammed the BJP over Ladki Bahin scheme in the state and accused the party of attempting to create a class of ‘salaried voters’ and asked his party workers and people if they wish to become salaried voters or self respecting voters.Turning to state issues, Thackeray slammed the Shinde-Fadnavis government for refusing to declare a wet drought despite heavy rains. He demanded Rs 50,000 per hectare for affected farmers and reminded the crowd that his government had implemented a time-bound farm loan waiver, while the BJP’s 2017 scheme was still pending.Story continues below this adHe accused the party of claiming the credit for projects initiated by the Sena UBT during the MVA, including the BDD chawl redevelopment and Mumbai’s nightlife reforms.“BJP criticised Aaditya about nightlife, but now they themselves have made the decision. Similarly BDD chawl was a project started by me,” he said.On the Maharashtra special public security bill, Uddhav said he and his party would keep opposing it as it had been created to brand all those who protest for their rights and justice in the country as ‘anti nationals’. Further linking it with Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk’s case, he said that those who protest in the country are being arrested and branded as anti-national.He condemned the arrest of Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA), arguing that Wangchuk was considered patriotic when praising Modi, but labelled anti-national when fighting for justice in Ladakh.Story continues below this adWhile stopping short of announcing a formal alliance with his cousin Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Uddhav reiterated that the two leaders had “come together to stay together” to protect Marathi pride and prevent any dilution of the Marathi identity in the state. “If anyone tries to sell Mumbai, we will tear their pockets apart,” he said.Thackeray also questioned the legacy of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as it completed a century, asking whether the organisation had fulfilled its objectives or produced “poisonous fruits.” Referring to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s outreach to Muslim clerics, he said, “They abuse Muslims in one breath and seek their company in another. What ideology is this?”He also challenged the claim that “every Indian is a Hindu,” asking why the BJP then continues to divide people on religious lines.Targeting BJP leaders in Maharashtra, he questioned Devendra Fadnavis’s popularity and alleged selective handling of corruption cases, stating that ministers close to the BJP were protected while officials were punished.Story continues below this adHe accused the BJP of double standards on relations with Pakistan. “They say Hindus are unsafe in Kashmir but play cricket with Pakistan. The father (Amit Shah) does hypocrisy, and the son (Jay Shah) plays cricket. That is their tradition. I am proud of the Thackeray tradition.”
