A Brazilian drug trafficker tried a daring prison escape by dressing up as his teenage daughter, but his plan fell apart when guards noticed he was acting strangely at the exit gate. Clauvino da Silva, a high-ranking member of Brazil’s Red Command gang, was caught trying to walk out of Rio de Janeiro’s Gericinó prison in August 2019. He was wearing a silicone mask, a long dark wig, tight jeans, and a pink T-shirt with cartoon donuts on it. The 42-year-old gangster was serving a 73-year sentence. He had planned to switch places with his 19-year-old daughter Ana Gabriele Leandro da Silva during visiting hours. She would stay behind in the cell while he escaped dressed in her clothes and accessories, which included a black bra and white flip flops. But prison officials got suspicious when the person they thought was a young woman started acting nervous while asking for her ID card back at the prison entrance. According to The Guardian, Silva, whose nickname was Baixinho or Shorty, apparently thought of himself as Brazil’s answer to the Mission Impossible hero who uses masks to trick his enemies. Guards told him to strip in front of cameras, and the video showing him taking off his disguise piece by piece quickly went viral across Brazil and around the world. The footage showed Silva peeling off the mask and showing his real face before saying his full name. This was not Silva’s first escape attempt The drug lord had actually broken out of the same prison before in January 2013. He was part of a group of 31 prisoners who dug a tunnel through the sewers. Four prisoners were caught right away, but Silva got away for about a month. He was later arrested again while trying to take control of a poor neighborhood in western Rio de Janeiro with a group of armed men. His story has some things in common with other criminals who have gone from prison to unexpected paths, though Silva’s story ended much worse. Officials said he probably would not get extra prison time since his escape attempt did not involve any violence. But his daughter was not so lucky. Ana Gabriele was arrested and was expected to be charged with helping a prisoner escape, a crime that can get you up to two years in prison. Seven other visitors were also being looked into, including a pregnant woman who officials think smuggled the disguise into the prison by hiding it on her body to get past security. Prison officials said he appeared to have killed himself with a bedsheet. They opened an investigation into his death right away. His death happened soon after officials had publicly celebrated stopping his escape by giving photos and videos of his strange disguise to the media. The whole thing was a big embarrassment for Brazil’s overcrowded prison system. It came just over a week after 58 prisoners were killed in horrible gang violence in the Amazon state of Pará. The case got attention from around the world and got people talking about prison conditions. It also made people think of popular prison escape shows that have kept audiences hooked for years.
