After all, our film industry, known for its penchant for typecasting and limited imagination, has long confined Deepak to the realm of peripheral comic characters, those who appear on screen mainly to generate easy laughs. To Deepak’s credit, his skill is such that he often doesn’t even need a strong script to elevate a scene; his very presence breathes life into it.Since his breakthrough in Tanu Weds Manu (a film that which is now more than half a decade old), Deepak has mostly been seen in commercial ventures as the go-to comedian, often trying to salvage both the film and its weak writing. From Dabangg 2 and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo to Hindi Medium, Good Luck Jerry, Bhediya, and more recently Son of Sardaar 2, the pattern of typecasting remains glaringly evident. In a recent conversation with SCREEN, Deepak opened up about this ongoing struggle:“There isn’t a single production house in Mumbai that hasn’t called me. Be it anyone. Even the biggies. But the problem is the repetition. If a comic role has worked, then the next dozen would be comic. In every film they asks you to do the same thing. And then I’m like, please don’t cast me in the same mould. No doubt, I’ll do it, but let me first try something new. I’m always keen on playing different shades.”Also Read | Saif Ali Khan was stunned by Deepak Dobriyal’s performance in Omkara, asked Vishal Bhardwaj, ‘where he is from?’He further added, “Although the silver lining here is that your one comic performance has impacted them so much that now they want you to do one more of the same kind. That’s basically an appreciation, but the problem is that it is limiting my craft.” Despite the limitations, Deepak is hopeful that the tide is beginning to turn after decades in the industry. “Now it has begun to move about, people are finally coming with different offers, especially after Sector 36. So let’s see how this new phase goes.”Deepak Dobriyal was last seen in Jugnuma: The Fable, currently playing in select theatres.Click here to follow Screen Digital on YouTube and stay updated with the latest from the world of cinema.© IE Online Media Services Pvt LtdTags:Deepak Dobriyal
