Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe has confirmed that Guyana is unlikely to host the semi-finals and final of the 2025 men’s Super50 tournament, slated for December.Bascombe, speaking at Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) quarterly press conference on Wednesday, noted that while the initial schedule had pegged Guyana as the venue for the decisive final rounds, CWI has been forced to revise its plans due to a “lack of appetite” from the local board to meet the necessary budgetary demands. The Director of Cricket explained that CWI is operating under tight financial constraints, necessitating greater cost-sharing from host territories for major regional events.Bascombe indicated that the costs attached to hosting an international cricket fixture begin “north of US$200,000” (approximately G$41.8 million) for a base two-team series. That figure would escalate significantly for the Super50 final rounds, which involve four teams, increased logistics, accommodation, and the deployment of a full broadcast crew to cover the semi-finals and the final.Bascombe stated that the shift away from Guyana was based on the follow-up discussions after the initial proposal was made last year.Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe“Initially, last year, when we proposed our first draft of our regional schedule, we discussed the possibility of the final rounds of the Super50 moving from Trinidad to Guyana, but that was also pending some discussions around the cost that would be associated with that move,” Bascombe stated.“We have continued and followed up on those discussions… and I don’t think that appetite exists [from the GCB], so as it stands… that is not likely to be the case and the Super50 will be played in a revised format and likely in Trinidad.”This financial reality check comes as CWI prepares to revamp its regional tournaments to better align with its fiscal position. The decision means Guyana’s long wait to host the final of the men’s premier 50-over competition will continue. The country has not hosted the Regional Super50 final since 2011, when Jamaica defeated the hosts at the National Stadium, Providence. They last hosted preliminary matches in the competition in 2013.Guyana’s own title drought in the tournament stretches back to 2005, when they won the final against Barbados in fading light at the iconic Georgetown Cricket Club, Bourda.Despite this setback for the men’s 50-over event, Guyana remains a significant hub for West Indies cricket. It recently hosted the Women’s Super50 and T20 Blaze and successfully staged the last final of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).The post ‘Guyana unlikely to host 2025 Super50 finals’ – CWI’s Director of Cricket appeared first on News Room Guyana.
