Infamous NFL draft bust linked to Sean McVay’s Rams in second chance as ‘developmental quarterback’

Wait 5 sec.

Could Anthony Richardson be on the move? The Indianapolis Colts took Richardson with the fourth overall pick in 2023, but have since benched him and moved on to Daniel Jones. It’s clear the experiment with Richardson in Indianapolis is over. Jones won the starting job in training camp and hasn’t looked back since. So what’s next for the guy who has all the physical tools in the world, but just can’t seem to put it all together?Paging arguably the best offensive mind in the league: Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay.According to two ESPN insiders, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano, Richardson wants to go somewhere he can revive his career.“One intriguing option is Anthony Richardson Sr., who is stuck behind Daniel Jones in Indianapolis,” Fowler wrote. “My sense is Richardson would be open to joining a premier playcaller such as Sean McVay as a developmental player so he can reset for 2026.““Richardson is an interesting one,” Graziano said. “I remember a couple of teams wondering whether Indy would be open to moving him during free agency. So far, they’ve insisted they aren’t, but you’re right.“If Jones keeps playing well and leads them to their first division title in more than a decade, who’s to say the Colts don’t decide he’s their future at quarterback and sign him to an extension?“In general, acquiring a starting QB at the trade deadline is tough, because in most cases it’s a guy who must learn a new offense on the fly.“By the time he’s up to speed, it could be too late for him to save the season. That’s why someone like Richardson, whom teams might view for development in the long term, makes more sense.”Could Richardson be on the move as early as this season? It’s quite possible. His time as a starting quarterback in Indianapolis is clearly over.Over just merely 15 NFL games, Richardson has completed 50.6 per cent of his passes, throwing for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. He’s also added 635 rushing yards and ten touchdowns on the ground.Richardson lost the QB1 job to Daniel Jones during training campGettyThe third-year pro had exciting highlights but was never able to find consistencyGettyWhether it was injuries, immaturity, or inconsistency, it just never clicked for Richardson in Indy. It’s time for a change of scenery and it could be coming sooner rather than later for the former Florida Gator.Richardson himself hasn’t spoken publicly about his future, but it would behove him to play under a coach like McVay.He did, however, speak before the season began about losing his job to Jones and how he has handled it.“You’ve got to respect the decision,” Richardson said. “You’ve got to respect it and just keep working.”While frustrated, he put everything into perspective.“That doesn’t undermine the work I’ve been putting in,” Richardson continued. “It doesn’t say that I haven’t improved. I’m proud of the improvement I’ve made.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for news, exclusive interviews and more.
