Haslington families receive new core homes

Three families of Haslington, East Coast Demerara, are celebrating homeownership, after receiving the keys to their new houses through the Ministry of Housing and Water – Central Housing and Planning Authority’s (CH&PA) Core Home Support initiative. The initiative is executed in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), as part of the wider Adequate Housing and Urban Accessibility Programme (AHUAP).The keys and electrical certificates were handed over by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal at the Ministry, alongside CH&PA’s Director of Operations, Mrs. Denise King-Tudor and Deputy Director of Community Development, Mrs. Donell Bess-Bascom.Among the new homeowners is Ms. Maylene O’Dell, who shared her relief at no longer having to pay rent.A resident signs the documents for her new core home (Photo: DPI/ Facebook/ august 7, 2025)Ms. O’Dell said, “I am so happy that I got this key that I would be able to go into my new home.” She added, “It will help us in a lot of ways because we used to pay a rent of $30,000 a month so [now] we get our own house that money [will] go to something else.”Ms. Evette Abrams also expressed her happiness to have the new home. Despite owning her plot of land for years, she faced several struggles that prevented her from building and hailed the programme for the much-needed support.Each Core Home, valued at approximately GYD $5 million-$6.5 million, includes two bedrooms, a kitchen, and indoor sanitary facilities.Beneficiaries make a contribution of GYD $100,000 toward construction—offering a far more affordable and secure alternative to renting.A resident gets the documents for her new core home (Photo: DPI/ Facebook/ august 7, 2025)AHAUP’s Component 1.1: Affordable and Sustainable Housing, supports both Core Home construction and Home Improvement Subsidies (the provision of materials to execute home repairs).Approximately 300 Core Homes are targeted for construction and disbursement of 916 Home Improvement Subsidies ranging from GYD $500,000 to $750,000.
