Door cam footage shows the moment a teenage accused murderer attempted to invade her elderly neighbor’s home. The teen told the woman she had just killed her grandmother, who the neighbor had known for years. The elderly neighbor defended herself with a mop. On July 26, 2025, police arrested the teen, 18-year-old Jailen Lupton, in rural Mobile County, Alabama. Lupton has now been charged with murder and second-degree burglary related to Lupton’s grandmother, 71-year-old Diane Trest’s death. Lupton pleaded not guilty. According to the door cam footage, after allegedly killing Trest, Lupton rushed next door to Trest’s neighbor, Cheryl Edwards’ house, and tried to push her way inside. And I said, ‘No, wait, you’re not going in my house’ and I shove her back as hard as I can and she falls down right there at the door.” Edwards then said she grabbed her mop and started hitting Lupton. “I said go, get off my porch,” Edwards said. Lupton left but then returned and tried again to break into Edwards home, telling her she needed her car keys. Edwards said, “As soon as I get to my door, she bams it with her shoulder and stuff and knocks, busts my door, my doorframe was busted open, everything, and knocks me down on the floor.” When Lupton was unable to get Edwards’ keys, she rushed into the road and was nearly hit by a car. Edwards says she flagged down a car for help and told them what Lupton said she had done. Edwards told the driver, “She broke into my house, she pushed me down, she kicked me. I said, she said she killed her grandma next door.” Trest was found unresponsive When Mobile County Sheriff’s Officers arrived, they found Trest unresponsive in her front yard with severe head trauma. A mallet was also found near her body. Some reports say Lupton and Trest had a strained relationship. But Edwards said Trest was proud of her granddaughter, who had just graduated from high school a few months before the crime. Some reports add that police found drugs at the scene and suspect Lupton was under the influence of methamphetamine, which may have contributed to her paranoid behavior. Lupton’s family reportedly told the authorities she had experienced mental health challenges. Authorities have otherwise not publicly disclosed a motive. Lupton is currently held on a $380,000 bond, and her next court appearance is September 22, 2025.
