Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.1.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.Moderate shaking probably occurred in Kirkagac (pop. 27,100) located 41 km from the epicenter, Soma (pop. 65,900) 43 km away, and Akhisar (pop. 84,700) 44 km away.In Balikesir (pop. 238,200) located 47 km from the epicenter, and Mustafakemalpasa (pop. 101,400) 90 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt15157–1,483 km (98–921 mi)661 km (411 mi)II: Very weak shaking20123–962 km (76–598 mi)251 km (156 mi)III: Weak shaking3999–426 km (61–265 mi)219 km (136 mi)IV: Light shaking335.4–553 km (3.4–343 mi)193 km (120 mi)V: Moderate shaking844–188 km (28–117 mi)115 km (71 mi)VI: Strong shaking744–174 km (28–108 mi)116 km (72 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (153 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report!
