Daniel Dubois is in a ‘fantastic position’ and the stars may be aligning for him to achieve something extraordinary. Those are the words of former WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves, who has sat down with talkSPORT.com to preview Dubois’ huge clash with Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday.Usyk vs Dubois takes place at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night with all four belts on the lineLeigh Dawney/QueensberryGroves knows exactly what it takes to fight at a packed Wembley Stadium, having been one half of the first pair to headline the redeveloped ground. He boxed Carl Froch in May 2014 in front of 80,000 fans, having suffered a controversial stoppage defeat to the Nottingham man six months prior.Although he tasted defeat to Froch again in their rematch, ‘Saint George’ proceeded to win nine of his next ten in the ring, including a win over Chris Eubank Jr, before retiring after a defeat to Callum Smith.Groves’ wealth of experience in the squared has him well-placed to assess such a huge encounter like Usyk vs Dubois 2.“I think, as always, it’s still to play for in that Oleksandr Usyk has been phenomenal throughout his career,” Groves explained, speaking from Dale Youth Boxing Club where Dubois trained as a youngster under legendary trainer Mick Delaney. “He’s been unstoppable. I’ve been a huge fan of his for a very long time. “When he went into the World Super Series as a cruiserweight before completing the division, he completed boxing — he had to move up a weight, and then he’s gone on to do exactly the same thing in the heavyweight division.“But at his age now, what’s going on in the world, some of his members and friends around him are stepping away from boxing, starting to retire.“So he might be starting to wind down. This might be the time to get him, and if he carries on boxing forever, someone’s gonna get him at some point.“Will it be Daniel Dubois? We’ll find out Saturday night. Dubois is in a fantastic position. He’s in great form. He looks like he’s in the best shape of his life, and coming off the biggest win of his career against Anthony Joshua.”Groves said Dubois is in the best shape of his life and could be set to achieve ‘something extraordinary’Leigh Dawney/Queensberry/GettyDubois contested Joshua at Wembley in his last bout ten months ago and stunned the boxing fraternity by knocking ‘AJ’ out cold in the fifth round. He was fighting for the IBF heavyweight strap after Usyk had made the decision to vacate the belt to rematch Tyson Fury.Should ‘Triple D’ defeat the Ukrainian, he will be crowned the first British undisputed heavyweight champion since 1999, when Lennox Lewis, who is backing Dubois to win, defeated Evander Holyfield.“It all might be just falling into place for him,” Groves added.“All the stars are aligning for him to really achieve something extraordinary by beating Usyk.“Avenging the first loss, but more so beating the best heavyweight of this era, one of the best heavyweights that have ever boxed.Dubois knocked Joshua out in round five in his last appearance in the ringMark Robinson/Matchroom“He’s gonna really elevate himself with a huge performance Saturday.”Former undisputed heavyweight champion Lewis told talkSPORT on Friday that Dubois must impose his heavyweight size on Usyk from the off on Saturday night, and Groves agreed.“I don’t think he needs to make it into that sort of rough-and-tumble dogfight, but he definitely needs to start quick,” the 37-year-old concluded.“Dubois is a big specimen of a heavyweight; he’s huge, he’s broad, has big arms, big shoulders, and he likes to press weight on the front foot at times, with high hands, and that’s what you want to do with Usyk. “You don’t want to give him time to settle and get into his rhythm — Usyk will always improve as the bout goes on.“Most fighters, once they’ve settled after three or four rounds, from five, six rounds on, they might be starting to fade, whereas Usyk seems to keep building, with his best rounds still to come — maybe even the championship rounds when he’s really settled into his groove.Groves shared one of British boxing’s greatest ever rivalries with FrochgettyHe believes Dubois could be the man to stop UsykRichard Pelham/Queensberry Promotions“So don’t give him that chance to settle in and bed into a fight. Just press him, take the centre of the ring, but keep inching forward, taking those steps.“Usyk’s got smart, fast feet — he’s very agile. If you just each and every time keep pressing, pressing, where you’re eating up that room in front of him. ‘Behind a high hand, head movement, sharp feints and that lovely jab that Dubois got. “If he sees a target, commit with that right hand, whether it be to the head or the body.“If he lands that, then the left hook can follow. He doesn’t want to miss with Usyk early, but I think if he wants, he should let some leather go in that first round. “Remind Usyk who he’s in with.”Usyk is hoping to become a three-time undisputed champion in London on SaturdayLeigh Dawney/QueensberryGroves will be in attendance on Saturday night, and although he admitted he’s a ‘huge’ fan of Usyk, he didn’t offer a stone-cold prediction. The West London native did, however, say that Dubois could well be the man to get Usyk if the latter begins to slip.George Groves was speaking at a Midnite event, as the former world champion previewed this weekend’s heavyweight unification fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois.Don’t miss Oleksandr Usyk v Daniel Dubois on Saturday July 19, Live only on DAZN.
