Yeah. I didn't mean it imply it's NEVER a thing. I think I've best seen it described as autonomy seeking syndrome. Basically the kid is having a 16 year old's autonomy seeking rebellion phase WAY earlier than is good for them. Instead of arguing that they should be allowed to have a later curfew, they're upset because you told them to wash their ass in the shower and it FEELS like you're controlling them too much. I've had kids with true ODD a few times. You DO have to offer them a choice, and let them feel like they're choosing how to meet their goals. I'll say things like "You have to show me that you know how to do X learning goal. How can you do that? I suggest this worksheet cause I already made it but I'll take new ideas." The kids with actual ODD are often WAY better than the kid whose parents load him up with diagnoses at 6 and will list them out every time we try and get them to help their kid manage their behavior. Like sure he has ADHD. That doesn't explain why he planned for 2 weeks to follow a boy into the bathroom and jump him, and had posted all over social media that he was going to do so. ODD doesn't explain why your kid is bringing a gun to school. And yet they'll try it. I had a kid who threatened to kick my ass because I took his sunflower seeds (we have carpet and 90% of them leave wet seed shells on the ground. They mold and make people sick and get embedded in the carpet). Mom said, well he has ODD so you're not allowed to tell him what to do. He can't follow rules. This is the issue a lot of people have.
