‘Drunk’ driver in Audi runs over family sleeping on Delhi footpath

(Photo: Special Arrangement)In the early hours of July 9, a white Audi, allegedly driven by a property dealer, ran over five people sleeping on a footpath in South West Delhi’s Vasant Vihar, critically injuring all of them, including an eight-year-old girl.The driver, Utsav Shekhar, 40, was arrested shortly after the incident. According to the Delhi Police, Shekhar was intoxicated and driving toward his home in Dwarka when the crash occurred near a petrol pump in front of Shiva Camp around 1.45 am.“Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded, wherein they stated that a white colour Audi car ran over them while they were sleeping on the footpath,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South West) Amit Goel.The victims — Ladhi (40), Bimla (8), Sabami (45), Narayani (35), and Ram Chander (45) — are all residents of Rajasthan. Police said they had recently arrived in Delhi and are currently unemployed. All five are receiving treatment.Following the incident, Shekhar reportedly drove about 200 meters before crashing into a truck. He was apprehended soon afterward.In a separate incident three days later, on Najafgarh Road near Uttam Nagar West Metro Station, a 30-year-old man, Vaideshwaran, suffered a brain injury in a hit-and-run crash. He was found unconscious beside his burnt scooter at around 1 am. A broken number plate, believed to belong to the vehicle involved, was recovered at the scene.“The crime team inspected the spot. Two people were found near the spot, but they refused to give any statement, stating they did not want to involve themselves in a police case,” police said.Story continues below this adA case under Sections 281 (rash or negligent driving) and 125(A) (acts endangering human life or personal safety) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered at the Bindapur police station.
