Map of today's active volcanoesSvartsengi (Reykjanes peninsula, SW Iceland): The effusive eruption at the site continues.Fountaining is being active from two fissures now. The larger chain of vents is estimated to be about 2.4 km long. A smaller one opened west of Fagradalsfjall and its length is approx. 500 meters. ... [read more] ... [show less] The fountain-fed lava streams ooze out towards two directions - east and west from both fissures, even though the eastern branch appears to be more active.Meanwhile, the seismic activity has decreased early this morning....16 Jul:A new eruption has started early this morning on the Reykjanes peninsula.Following an intense earthquake swarm indicating the final push of magma towards the surface from shortly after midnight, an eruptive fissure opened southeast of Litla-Skógfell at 3.54 am local time. ... The lava fountains along the fissure (known as curtain of fire) have quickly produced a lava field that reached about 1 square kilometer in surface area within the first hour.Kirishima (Kyushu): Volcanic Ash Advisory Center Tokyo (VAAC) issued the following report: POSS ACTIVITY CONT. Dense ash plumes were seen rising about 800-1000 m above the summit and causing ash fall over the northwestern sector of the volcano.Reports suggest that lava has returned to the northern pit crater, but what exactly caused the explosive activity is unclear. ... [read more] ... [show less] Normally, Erta Ale with its typical fluid basaltic magmas that most often forms lava lakes in the summit crater or extensive lava flows during flank eruptions or overflows from the summit vents is not producing much explosive activity of this type. This means something very unusual is taking place. One possibility is that could be related to collapse processes due to quickly rising and falling magma levels in the upper conduits. Another one could be that rising magma got in contact with ground water, producing violent explosions (so-called phreatomagmatic activity). In any case, the summit area should be considered a very dangerous place at the moment, not only because of the risk of being hit by ejecta or caught in hot ash flows, but also because the terrain might be undergoing re-adjustments and form new craters (i.e. the ground can collapse at unexpected places especially inside the vast caldera).Volcano Activity Summary for 16 Jul 2025:The lava flow field continues to enlarge away from the fissure (image: Guide to Iceland/x.com)
