Disney Cast Member’s Firing Sparks Debate – Is Disney Being Fair?

Wait 5 sec.

The recent firing of a Disneyland Resort cast member has sparked debate among Disney Parks fans. Many believe the Southern California Disney park was too harsh, while others say the former cast member should’ve known better than to break company policy. On July 3, Inside the Magic shared this video from TikTok user @offeruphustle, who said it was the reason Disneyland Resort fired him. Because the Disney cast member took the footage after Disneyland Park closed, the Main Street, U.S.A., area was considered “backstage,” even though it’s usually an “onstage” area. Disney cast members are prohibited from filming in backstage areas. @offeruphustle The video that got me FIRED. Sucks cuz I was days away from quitting and doing OfferUp full time and running my laser business. They beat me to the punch #disneyland ♬ Married Life – Michael Giacchino The report sparked intense debate. After all, many Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort guests can enter before the parks open with breakfast dining reservations or tours. They are permitted to take and share photos and videos. Should a Disney cast member be treated differently? The former Disney cast member argued that he wasn’t trying to ruin the magic. In fact, he said he wanted Disney Park guests to see how hard cast members work to keep everything clean: “Ppl would say Disney don’t wash the floors everyday. Well I was the one washing the floors everyday except Wednesday/Thursday rain or shine.”Credit: DisneySeveral commenters defended the former Disneyland Resort employee.“Disneyland has really become a tyranny, cant believe they would fire you over something so petty…,” @charlie2022la wrote.“That’s a silly rule,” @jordyn.reyes_ argued.Credit: DisneyMany pointed out that Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort often share their own behind-the-scenes videos, like this one of Disney cast members decorating Magic Kingdom Park for Christmas.“Don’t they have like ‘behind the magic’ videos that show the workers getting Disney in shape or whatever?” @jazmineadrianaa asked. “Right??? Like or am I wrong?? Sooo I don’t understand how this video was soo bad..”“I used to work for The Disney Channel in the Video Tape Dept,” said @justicejones007. “We created behind the scenes programming for Walt Disney Films but also for Disneyland. We literally created a video called “Disney After Dark” about what happens after the park closes which is an entire fascinating operation unto itself, and it goes all night long. So, I can’t imagine how this video could get you fired. There are no secrets spilled. The park looks beautiful. And it feels magical. Isn’t that the whole point of Disneyland? Tell me what is wrong here.”Credit: DisneyStill, many Disney Parks fans blamed the former cast member for breaking the rules…even if those rules didn’t make sense to him.“The cast member should have been fired,” one Inside the Magic commenter wrote. “If you don’t like the rules that your employer has in place don’t take the job. Normal people know how hard cast members work in order to keep the parks clean. We see the army of cast who patrol all of the park with a broom and dustpan, so guests only see a piece of trash which another rude guest just dropped.”Credit: Disney“It’s true that many of us would enjoy a peek behind the scenes after the park closes,” said another. “But they have rules about filming and sharing anything backstage for a reason. I feel for the guy, who just wanted people to appreciate all the hard work that goes into cleaning the park from stem to stern nightly. But he knew that sharing the video was against his contract.”In the end, the former Disney cast member is doing well. He said he was “days away from quitting” before Disneyland Resort “beat [him] to the punch,” and is pursuing his own business full-time. After his footage garnered attention, the TikToker shared a second video of Disneyland Park after closing: @offeruphustle Enjoy the clip This was around 5am What’s your best memory here #disneyland #disneycastle ♬ original sound – FLIPS Was Disney right to fire this cast member?
