Eugenie Bouchard is calling it a career. The 31-year-old professional tennis player took to X to announce her upcoming and final event.Bouchard has officially announced her last professional eventGetty“You’ll know when it’s time. For me, it’s now. Ending where it all started: Montreal,” Bouchard wrote. The 2014 Wimbledon finalist will pick up her tennis racket one final time at the WTA 1,000 Canadian Open in Montreal later this month before walking off into the sunset. The Montreal native was a former world No. 5 at the peak of her career, during her breakout season in 2014.Since then she hasn’t quite reached that high on the court, but she has found tons of success off of it.In 2015, SportsPro ranked Bouchard as the number one most marketable athlete in the world, ahead of the likes of Neymar, Jordan Spieth, Stephen Curry and Usain Bolt.A lot of that was due to Bouchard embracing her feminine side as a female athlete.“Tennis, first of all, is a great sport for that sex appeal side,” Bouchard told YouTuber Valeria Lipovetsky in a wide-ranging interview that touched on public scrutiny and the evolution of the women’s game.“We’re wearing short skirts, we’re wearing tank tops. It’s fun to turn on the TV and watch that. Right away I was able to get great marketing deals off the court. Being asked to be in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition a few times.“Exploring that path was definitely on my to-do list. It’s definitely part of who I am because I think it’s great.”Her brand and reputation away from the court led to deals that helped her become more than just an amazing athlete.Top ten most marketable athletes of 2015Bouchard was top of the world in 2015, according to SportsPro's list of starsEugenie Bouchard (tennis)Neymar (football)Jordan Spieth (golf)Missy Franklin (swimming)Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1)Virat Kohli (cricket)Steph Curry (basketball)Kei Nishikori (tennis)Katarina Johnson-Thompson (athletics)Usain Bolt (athletics)Bouchard lost to Petra Kvitova in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon in 2014GettyBouchard’s bubbly personality made it easy to market herselfGetty“Tennis is the only thing I know, but it can’t be the only thing I’ll ever do in my life,” Bouchard continued.“So I found it very interesting to be in the magazines or do fashion stuff and see that I really enjoyed these things as well.”However, it wasn’t until 2017 when an unusual story involving Bouchard became the talk of the tennis world. She made a wager with a fan on Twitter on the outcome of Super Bowl LI when she backed the Atlanta Falcons to beat the New England Patriots.Bouchard accepted a bet to go on a date with the fan if the Falcons lost. The Falcons were up 28-3 in the second half, and well, the rest was history. One all-time collapse later, and suddenly Bouchard found herself going on dates. She was true to her word, and went on a handful of dates with the fan before things eventually came to an end.“That infamous moment in my life when I tweeted when I shouldn’t have just turned into this whole thing,” she said back in 2020.“I’m in touch with him casually. Sometimes he plays hard to get and I’m like, ‘Bro, we’re friends, text me back, it’s OK’. We’ve hung out a bunch of times. I think he has a girlfriend now though, maybe that’s why he doesn’t text me back.”In recent years, Bouchard has drifted more to the game of pickleball, where she has found success, including a win over world No. 3, Lea Jansen. She even teamed up with the 2003 U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick and battled eight-time major champion Andre Agassi and his wife, 22-time major champion Steffi Graf, in the “Pickleball Slam” earlier this year.It remains to be seen if Bouchard will transition to the other racket sport and play competitively and consistently, but one thing is for certain. She probably won’t be tweeting or posting about any bets online in retirement.
