After a 19-year-old woman from the Patidar community died by suicide in Surat Sunday afternoon, community leaders took out a candle march on Wednesday night. The decision was taken at a meeting on Tuesday. The march was led by AAP MLA Gopal Italia and other political and community leaders.The victim’s father on Wednesday complained to Surat police commissioner Anupam Sinh Gahlaut that a group of youths had been trying to defame his late daughter and his family on social media, putting up alleged fake messages and morphed photos.Surat Mayor Daxesh Mavani; Leader of Opposition (AAP) of SMC, Payal Sakariya; and Katargam BJP MLA Veenu Moradiya met the woman’s father on Wednesday afternoon.Newly elected Visavadar MLA Italia, along with other Patidar and political leaders, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti members and BJP leaders Alpesh Katheriya and Dharmik Malaviya, attended the candlelight march, which started from Dabholi crossroads and after covering a kilometre, culminated at Patidar Samaj Wadi (community hall) at Ambatalavdi in Katargam on Wednesday night.Patidar leader from Surat, Vijay Mangukiya, earlier on Wednesday said: “The candle march has been organised to pay condolence to the victim and her family and also to tell the people of the (Patidar) community that if any such thing happens to any of the Patidar family in Surat or in any part of Gujarat, they should first approach the police, so that timely actions can be taken and lives of Patidar daughters can be saved. We have decided to make our mobile phone numbers public so that people can get in touch. We will become a medium of justice for the victim’s father, with the help of the police.”On Tuesday night, the victim’s father, her brother, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti convenors Alpesh Katheriya, Dharmik Malaviya, Congress leader from Amreli district Pratap Dudhat, and others participated in a community meeting held on the campus of Yogi Pravuti Vidhyalay at Ambatalavdi, to discuss and decide the future course of action in connection with the death of the 19-year-old woman.The victim was allegedly stalked and threatened by a group of youths. At Tuesday’s meeting, it was decided that community members would use their social media handles to inform people about the candle march.Story continues below this adOn Wednesday afternoon, the victim’s father and few community leaders met Surat police commissioner Gahlaut. They handed an application requesting him to take strict actions against a group of youths — Krish Desai, Ravi Bhalana, Hardik Bhalana, Rakesh Satiya, Nikunj Rayka, Govind Desai, Hardik Desai and others — who were allegedly put up the fake messages and morphed photos of the victim.The woman had on Sunday afternoon died by suicide at her residence in Surat. Her family, including her parents and elder brother, were out for some work. The incident came to light when the family members returned in the evening and found her hanging. They took her to a hospital, where she was declared dead by the doctors.A huge funeral procession was taken out on Monday that was attended by a large number of people from the Patidar community.On Tuesday, the victim’s father had complained about a 17-year-old boy and his father, Vishnu Desai, at Singhanpore police station. Police had booked both the father and the son under BNS sections 108 (if any person commits suicide, whoever abets the commission of offence), 308(2)( deals with the offense of extortion.), 78(2) ( pertaining to stalking), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351 (3)(criminal intimidation).Story continues below this adTalking to The Indian Express, Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Pinakin Parmar said, “We have arrested the accused’s father, Vishnu Desai, who deals in milk business, and we have got a single-day police remand of him. The accused boy is a juvenile and has been apprehended and produced before the Juvenile Justice Court. He was later sent to a children’s remand home. The accused boy is in his second year of college.”The Maldhari samaj in Surat on Wednesday afternoon met Surat police commissioner and made representations about free and fair investigations in the incident.
