Justice Vibhu Bakhru to be new Karnataka High Court Chief Justice

With the Ministry of Law and Justice issuing over 20 orders on Monday approving judge transfers, the Karnataka High Court is set to gain two new judges–the new Chief Justice, Justice Vibhu Bakhru, and Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh. Acting Chief Justice Kameshwar Rao has meanwhile been transferred to the Delhi High Court.Justice Bakhru of the Delhi High Court was recommended for a transfer to the Karnataka High Court based on a May 26 meeting of the Supreme Court collegium, alongside Chief Justice recommendations for four other high courts. A native of Nagpur, he had practised law in Delhi across the Supreme Court, high court, and other venues since 1990, and was designated as a senior advocate in 2011. Originally appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2013, he served as the Acting Chief Justice there from December 5 last year to January 21, 2025.Like Justice Bakhru, Acting Chief Justice Kameshwar Rao also began his practice in Delhi from 1991 and was likewise elevated in 2013 as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court. He has been serving as a judge of the Karnataka High Court since June last year and has been Acting Chief Justice since Chief Justice Anjaria’s elevation to the Supreme Court at the end of May this year. Among the key case hearings Justice Rao oversaw as Acting Chief Justice is the suo motu PIL petition dealing with the recent stampede tragedy near Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy stadium.Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh served in the Allahabad High Court from 2017 to 2023 and has since been serving as a judge of the Kerala High Court.On April 23, the transfer of four judges from the Karnataka High Court sparked protests by advocates, including a one-day boycott.
