‘Profoundly sorry’ – Patrick Mahomes’ star teammate sentenced to jail time with suspension likely on the way

Wait 5 sec.

The Kansas City Chiefs will soon be without a key weapon. That’s because star wide receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced to 30 days of jail time and five years probation for his role in a multi-car crash last year.Rice heads into his third season in the NFLGettyThe Dallas County District Attorney’s office put out a statement revealing that Rice had pleaded guilty in district court to two third-degree felony charges. The charges were collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The third-year wideout will be allowed to serve his jail time at any point during the five-year probationary window. However, since the legal proceedings have been wrapped up, the NFL can now expedite its disciplinary process, which will all but guarantee a multi-game suspension for Rice.“We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review,” NFL vice president of communications Brian McCarthy told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.Rice released a statement through his attorney, expressing his remorse and taking responsibility.“Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas,” Rice said.“There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole.“I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart.“Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property.Rice will be awaiting to hear from the league officeGettyRice will be expected to play a big role in KC’s offense when he returnsGetty“I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”Rice will now have to wait for the league office to see how long, or how little, his upcoming suspension will be.He is coming off a torn right ACL that he suffered last season in Week 4, but all reports indicate that he is fully healthy and will be ready to go when Kansas City begins training camp next week. All eyes will be on Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid as they incorporate Rice back into the offense, while also keeping in mind that a suspension is likely coming for the talented WR out of SMU.Reid has already sent a message to his offense about what he expects out of the group ahead of the 2025 season, and to get ready to roll right from the jump.“Coach Reid told us during OTAs Phase 1, ‘When you come back, get your hamstrings ready,’ ” Xavier Worthy told Kay Adams during an appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Up and Adams” show. “So, we kind of knew that we were going to be going a little deep during practice.“We kind of got our bodies and our minds ready for what we’re going to be doing in practice.”Worthy himself expects to be used a whole lot more than his rookie year.“I feel like they started using me a lot underneath,” Worthy said, “and I can get started over the top because me and Pat are building that rapport together.“We’re going to build it in training camp. We got it going at the end of the Super Bowl a little bit, so that was a great feeling to be able to connect deep towards the end of the year.”While Mahomes won’t be too happy about losing Rice, he can be happy that Trey Smith isn’t going anywhere.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?Kansas City extended their massive guard to a four-year, $9 million deal with $70m guaranteed, making him the highest-paid guard in NFL history. It is also the highest-average annual salary and the most guaranteed money ever awarded to an NFL guard. There’s no telling how scary the offense can be in Kansas City, especially when at full strength.
