The Municipal Corporation Gurgaon (MCG), over the past week, has intensified efforts to address longstanding issues of mismanagement and leachate overflow at the Bandhwari landfill site.Bandhwari landfill site that serves as a primary dumping ground for waste from Gurgaon and Faridabad has sparked criticism over groundwater contamination and other issues.Under the supervision of Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya projects such as installation of view cutters and boundary wall, construction of a road and drainage system, and leachate control system is under way at Bandhwari, a spokesperson said. The works were launched on July 14.The view cutters, designed to block the landfill’s view from surrounding areas, are being prioritised along the landfill site’s perimeter, said an officer.Further, on the night of July 17-18, the MCG cleared leachate and waste scattered on the road outside the site, relocating it within the landfill using 10 tippers, three excavating machines and two JCB machines.“This effort not only cleaned the area but also created a new internal road, restricting truck movement to the site and preventing leachate spillage on the Gurugram-Faridabad road,” the spokesperson added. To curb pollution, leachate from the site is being transported to the nearest sewage treatment plant (STP) via tankers. A Rs 63-lakh proposal for sustained leachate transport has been prepared, with the tender process set to begin soon.Story continues below this adA Rs 2.45-crore proposal for constructing a 15-metre-wide, 400-metre-long cement concrete (CC) road alongside the view cutters has received administrative and technical approval on July 17. The tender for the work will be opened on July 29, said the spokesperson. The MCG will build a reinforced cement concrete (RCC) drain to facilitate truck movement and control leachate flow and will install an additional weighbridge to streamline garbage truck movement and reduce waiting times.“Following the commissioner’s instructions, MCG’s electrical wing has installed a DG set to ensure uninterrupted power supply for the ongoing operations,” the spokesperson shared.Chief Engineer Vijay Dhaka emphasised that the Bandhwari landfill is a top priority, with senior officials monitoring progress daily.Story continues below this ad“These swift, coordinated efforts aim to provide relief to nearby residents and address environmental concerns, with visible progress expected in the coming days,” Dhaka said. The landfill, located in the Aravallis section on the Gurgaon Faridabad district borders, had seen at least four incidents of fire in April.Neelam Ahluwalia, founder member of People for Aravallis, had at the time told The Indian Express, “Toxic landfills such as Bandhwari need to be removed from the eco-sensitive Aravalli. If all of Gurgaon and Faridabad’s waste is segregated at source, and dry waste is recycled, then only 15-20 per cent of the waste will have to be sent to the landfill.”
