(File Photo)The draft notification demarcating the boundaries of the proposed municipal wards in municipal corporations, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), has been published on the websites of individual civic bodies.As per the schedule, the suggestions and objections on the published draft will have to be submitted on or before September 4. Based on that, hearings will be conducted for the suggestions and objections and based on the recommendations, a final list on demarcation of wards will be published.The BMC will have 227 wards as in previous civic polls which were held in 2017. In the rest of the 28 municipal corporations, the wards will have either three or four members. The bill proposing ‘not less than three and not more than five members’ ward system was passed by the state legislative Assembly in March 2024, as per which each ward of a municipal corporation shall elect as far as possible four councillors, but not less than three and not more than five councillors.In Maharashtra, the local body polls will be nothing less than mini-Assembly polls. In urban areas, there are 29 total municipal corporations (Jalna and Ichalkaranji are newly formed), and all are currently run by administrators and without an elected body. The state has a total of 248 municipal councils and all are run by administrators. Out of 147 nagar panchayats, the newly formed nagar panchayats are 42, where elections will be held.In rural Maharashtra, out of total 34 zilla parishads, 32 have administrators, except for Bhandara and Gondia whose term will end in May 2027.
